Definition of Maori words

Hey readers….
This week during EOTC I decided to do the definition of maori words. I chose to do another Maori
activity and find the definitions and some of the meanings of these Maori words today. These words
were based of some of the people they have at the Marae when people will go and visit.

  • Waiata:
Definition: A Maori song
A waiata is a song that is sung before or after a maori meeting, or at kapa haka, ect.
There is usually a leader that will start of or lead the waiata as well.

  • Pōwhiri
Definition: A maori welcoming ceremony
A Powhiri is used for welcoming all visitors like royalty, school groups to a Marae or a
place. These may vary from Marae to Marae and places to places.

  • Kaikaranga
Definition: Call out, summon.
It is an element of culture protocol of New Zealand's maori people. People use it to call
out other people that come and visit and
exchange it from one another.

  • Kaikōrero
Definition: Speaker
The word is used in Maori which means “speaker”

  • Whare Manaaki
Definition:  Hospitality
Makaaki plays a key role in maori society. Looking after, caring how the visitors/guest
are treated during their visits. No matter what, it important.

Thats the definiton of those words. Thank you for reading
